Some info…about me

I have been many things in my lifetime, but always a woodworker at heart. Genetics I guess.

Turning on a lathe came about when boredom set in building rectangles for peoples kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms.  And a distant memory of turning a walnut lamp in high school shop class… While I still build bespoke furniture pieces, preferably with a curve involved, most of my time is spent in front of the lathe.

I source 95% of my wood from firewood piles, road side finds and  local arborists who have taken diseased or storm damaged trees down. Its going to be burnt, composted or used as landfill,  so I might as well put it to some use. The remainder is offcuts from furniture projects.

The shavings are donated to a local composter or used as mulch. The wood scraps are donated as firewood to anyone who will take them.

All bowls are finished with a food safe oil, and waxed. So long as they are not put in the microwave or dishwasher, they should last for quite some time. Rinse them and allow to air dry or dry with a cloth.

Vases generally have a small test tube inside so that plants can have water. This can be easily removed so that they can be used for dry twigs or flowers

Lastly, I only work in hardwoods, so once they have fulfilled their life as a functional or decorative piece , they make great firewood.

Bowl care

All of my bowls and platters are finished with a coat of deep penetrating food safe oil and then waxed and buffed with a food safe hard wax. Depending on the species of wood, some get 2 coats of oil. Some woods are thirstier than others.

They are allowed to dry for a week, fully curing the wax and making them resistant to water.

Bowl can be wiped down with a damp cloth or sponge, , rinsed quickly in warm water and then dried. Do not use scrubbing pads , it will not harm the wood, but will remove the wax.

Never put  it in a dishwasher!

Never put it in a microwave!

Never soak it  in water!

Over time the bowl will lose a little of its lustre as the wax wear off. This is to be expected A light coating of Food safe Mineral Oil, or Walnut oil(available at most grocery stores- do not use if you have a nut allergy)  will help revitalise it. Do not use Olive oil or vegetable oil as they can go bad and smell..

You are welcome to contact me for information on refinishing any piece.

With care, it should be usable for many years.

I hope you enjoy it.
